Consumer Tips
Winterization
- Winterize outdoor spigots. Disconnect the hose and allow water to drain from outside faucets.
- Insulate or install heat tape on pipes and faucets in unheated or exposed areas.
- Seal air vents, windows, and cracks, particularly those near water lines.
- Heat your entire home, especially if there is plumbing in the walls.
- Locate and mark the master water shut-off valve inside your home.
- Watch the weather and snow cover. Extended cold periods or minimal snow cover may require extra precautions.
Summer Tips
- Mulch around plants, bushes and trees to help the soil moisture, discourage the growth of weeds, and provide essential nutrients.
- Wash your car with a bucket of soapy water and use a nozzle to stop the flow of water from the hose between rinsings.
- Clean driveways and sidewalks with a broom instead of the hose.
- Check for leaks in outdoor faucets, pipes and hoses.
